This morning I spent a wonderful hour and a half with an aromatology client. She was coming to me for help with a specific issue which I we’d already discussed. I took a full medical history with a view to making sure the essential oil blend I wanted to use was safe for her and, in the process, I discovered that her main complaint was actually something else. It took 45 minutes to get her there, talking about anything and everything, including the factors that caused the issue. She actually said that she occasionally gets “a bit stressed” several times during our conversation – but it was only when I made her a blend specifically for Stress and she was blown away by her own reaction to it, that she fully acknowledged exactly how much stress she is under.
This lady had come to see me for help with debilitating back and joint pain and had been looking forward to her appointment for two weeks – but once she inhaled that stress blend, the change in her physical demeanour was instant. I handed her a sniffing stick to make sure she liked the fragrance and she instantly loved it. She was so besotted with it, in fact, that she almost forgot about the pain relief, and could hardly process my instructions for using it, because she wanted everything to be about what we agreed to call her “Happiness Blend”. Although I could tell from taking her history that most of her physical problems stem from her stress, it was still amazing to witness how greedily and gratefully her body soaked in that vibrant fragrance.
I could see that this was more than a physical transformation, this uplifted her emotional and energetic selves too. This is the beauty and pleasure of working with pure plant essences, and the reason for the popularity of essential oils. They help your body to help itself. I remembered back to when I was a student of basic aromatherapy and was captivated by the idea that plant molecules are effectively the keys to our cells unlocking their own healing abilities. It sounded like magic to me then, and today I was reminded again that aromatherapy really IS a kind of magic. Unlike drugs, aromatherapy can help you recover from so many different ailments without side effects, without killing helpful cells, and without leaving you with a toxic hangover. Stress can so easily lead you into a downward spiral of illness as it moves from mental inconvenience to physical manifestations galore and yet we ignore it. We pretend we aren’t stressed, even in the face of obvious stressors. Or, even worse, we acknowledge it and try to self-medicate with alcohol, chocolate or whatever your favourite poison is. Stress is insidious in itself, but the damage that the stigma of “being stressed” does is worse.
My point here is that I think we ALL need to be more aware of how stressful our lives are, and address it as often as possible with whatever counts as soul-medicine for you.
It is all too easy to poo-poo our issues by putting them in quote marks and calling them “first world problems” but that fails to address that something is stressful to us, in our here and now. Yes, there is always someone worse off, but whilst that approach can help you with gratitude, it just adds guilt to the stress when you think about it! We humans are hard-wired towards negativity, which is why even the most positive of thinkers has to make a conscious effort to stay that way. Often, we are dealing with genuinely stressful situations because of, rather than in spite of, our affluent society. So next time you feel out of balance, in pain, off kilter, or just a bit unwell… Feel into it. Find the REAL cause of why you feel that way and address it. If it can be fixed, that’s wonderful, go ahead and fix it. But, if as is often the case, it’s something you have to live with, find something to help you.
For this lady, it was a beautiful blend of oils that uplifted her, leaving less room for negativity in her cells. What would it be for you?
