Guidelines for safe use
The following guidelines will help ensure you are using essential oils safely:
Essential oils are flammable liquids. Keep them away from fire and naked flame.
Keep out of the reach of children, the elderly and pets.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist prior to using essential oils if you are taking regular medication and/or undergoing any kind of medical treatment.
Certain oils should be avoided during pregnancy. Please speak to a professional aromatherapist before using aromatherapy if you are pregnant.
Always consult a professionally qualified aromatherapist before using essential oils on babies and children.
Never take essential oils orally and avoid all contact with the mouth and eye area.
Essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin without being diluted in a base oil or carrier first, as they can cause irritation. Lavender and Tea Tree are the exceptions to this rule, but we still advise you to use sparingly and not for prolonged periods.
If you have sensitive skin, we recommend performing a patch test before using new oils or products containing herb or spice oils.
Some citrus oils (e.g. Bergamot) are phototoxic which means they can cause the skin to be sensitive to light. These oils should not be applied to the skin less than 12 hours before exposure to sunlight.
